After field-testing several different recording systems earlier this year, Scripps Television Station Group has decided to supply all 10 of its owned and operated stations with JVC ProHD cameras and accessories to support the company’s migration to HD. Going forward, all studio and field reporting will be acquired in the 720p HD format. This includes transmitting live remotes via the GY-HD250 ProHD camcorder’s built-in encoder.
Under terms of a new, multiyear agreement, Scripps will purchase more than 150 GY-HD250 ProHD camcorders, more than 150 BR-HD50sProHD recorder/players, more than 300 DR-HD10060G HD hard disk recorders and approximately 100 JVC digital LCD monitors.
The ProHD (19.7Mb/s) format equipment costs less than other formats, enabling station groups to move to HD sooner. Michael Doback, vice president of engineering at Scripps, called it “the right solution, at the right time and at the right price.” The format’s full HD quality, compact size, interchangeable professional broadcast lenses and dual media workflow capability were also deciding factors.
JVC will provide a service facility with technical and user training experts, as well as Web-based support, for Scripps’ technicians.
