SGI Announces Open Broadcast Partnerships

SGI is partnering with several leading server manufacturers to help broadcasters move towards digital workflow environments.

The goal of the "Open Broadcast Initiative" is to help broadcasters create a digital IT infrastructure and integrate digital broadcast gear including Omneon's Spectrum media servers and Pinnacle NLE systems. SGI has already developed a suite of software products for integration with Pinnacle's Liquid editing platform as well as a different version for Avid.

SGI--based in Mountain View, Calif.--recently launched an Open Storage initiative that made the storage and management software available on the open Linux 64-bit OS, so it is natural to extend this open approach to our broadcast offerings, said Chris Golson, senior director, market strategies, media industries, SGI.

"As the demand for high definition television increases, broadcasters are increasingly looking for cost-effective and flexible approaches to HD ingest, production and playout," said Dan Marshall, VP, worldwide sales and service, Omneon.
