Helping public station KLRU-TV with its digital transition to multichannel operation, SignaSys, a system integrator based in San Jose, Calif., has completed installation work on an extensive automation, ATSC encoding and server project.
KLRU, located in Austin, Texas, is owned by The Capital of Texas Public Telecomm Council. For the multi-phase project SignaSys provided project management, design and installation services--including project budgeting, scheduling and transitional planning--as well as equipment installation and engineering expertise.
David Kuipers, Director of Engineering at KLRU, said he chose SignaSys after visiting SignaSys' Multi-Channel Broadcast Alliance (MBA) lab in its San Jose headquarters. SignaSys demonstrated multichannel automation interfaces and together they devised a strategy to increase the station’s output from two to four channels (2 NTSC, 2 DTV) under the control of a Crispin system.
To facilitate its desire to multicast and broadcast a single channel in the 1080i HD format, the station installed four standard-definition encoders, one HD encoder, a multiplexer, an automation and traffic interface, PSIP generator, advanced monitoring system, and a closed caption and EAS system.
KLRU also established the ability to store and trim analog and digital audio and video files on a server; automate file transfers between traffic and automation; and has added an interface to the DTV MPEG-2 multiplexer system.
