The Sony DVCAM DSR1500, a half-rack studio editing player/recorder comes equipped with a 6-pin i.LINK IEEE 1394 DV I/O connection allowing it to be immediately integrated into nonlinear systems with connection compatibility. It also has a wide range of standard analog outputs, enabling it to function not only as a feeder for an analog editing system but also as a stand-alone playback viewer.
Sony has sold 310,000 units of its DVCAM format worldwide.
Introduced in 1996, it took four years for the DVCAM to reach the 100,000 milestone and since then, almost twice as many units have been sold. The format has gained a foothold in broadcast and professional applications, including Web-based content creation, nature documentaries, feature film, episodic TV production and ENG operations. Professional and college sports teams and virtually every film school has also embraced the small (6mm/1/4-inch) tape format.
Among the latest broadcasters to adopt the DVCAM format is WCVB-TV, the ABC affiliate in Boston, Mass. WCVB-TV has purchased more than a million dollars in acquisition equipment for its news operation, including DVCAM editing recorders, players, and videotapes.
Included in the purchase is a mix of Master Series editing VTRs and source decks that use specially designed DVCAM tapes to withstand the demands of daily news production.
