The dust may have barely settled since the most recent World Cup last summer, but the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is readying itself for the next world contest in earnest. SABC issued an update on its Web site this week that it's gearing up for the 2010 Soccer World Cup by unveiling an HD broadcast unit (both hardware and personnel), which it says is the first of its kind on the African continent.
SABC, a national public broadcaster, holds the official rights for the host country for the next quadrennial soccer World Cup. It said its first "HD outside unit" (mobile) cost slightly under $10 million. The group's first HD sports broadcast will be an international cricket match between South Africa and India on Sunday, Nov. 19. South Africa is planning on an all-HD World Cup, following in the technological footsteps of the 2006 contests held at a dozen stadiums throughout Germany.
