Sprint Nextel sheds additional light on WiMAX plans
Sprint Nextel is moving forward with its planned Mobile WiMAX advanced multimedia network with initial service launches in several markets by the end of 2007 and coverage of 100 million people in the United States by the end of 2008.
WiMAX service areas identified for a 2008 launch include Chicago, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, Washington D.C., Austin, Dallas, Denver, Fort Worth, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and Seattle.
At NAB2006, KRON-TV in San Francisco discussed experiments it was conducting with a Bay Area WiMAX service provider to use the broadband wireless service as an alternative to conventional ENG microwave transmission for edited packages and live shots from the field.
Sprint will work with WiMAX partners to incorporate the technology into a range of computing, portable multimedia, interactive and other business and consumer electronic devices.
