Study finds higher income households more likely to own HDTVs

One in six U.S. households now have at least one HDTV compared with one out of every 14 two years ago, according to new research from Leichtman Research Group (LRG).

The research found 26 percent of households with annual incomes of more than $50,000 have an HDTV compared to 6 percent of households with annual incomes below $30,000. According to LRG, the mean annual household income of HDTV households is 42 percent above average.

The research broke HDTV ownership down by household income. It found:

  • Under $30,000 annual household income: 6 percent have an HDTV
  • $30,000-$50,000: 8 percent;
  • $50,000-$75,000: 17 percent;
  • $75,000-$100,000: 25 percent;
  • More than $100,000: 38 percent.

Other findings include:

  • 26 percent of HDTV owners have more than one HDTV, up from 11 percent last year;
  • 29 percent of HDTV owners are likely to get another HDTV in the next year, up from 18 percent last year;
  • One-third of adults have heard of the digital TV transition/analog switch-off.

LRG surveyed 1300 households throughout the United States for its new “HDTV 2006: Consumer Awareness, Interest and Ownership” study.
