Survey: 1080p Shipments Surge, Plasma Stays Competitive
Despite somewhat flat sales for plasma HD displays in the second quarter of 2008 (following a jump in the first quarter), demand was high especially outside the United States and China for 1080p LCD and plasma models, according to the latest quarterly report from DisplaySearch.
Sales of 1080p units showed a leap of 54 percent year-to-year in the second quarter, led by mostly 46-inch models. Market share of the 1080p format in the overall 42- and 50-inch categories jumped 89 percent from quarter to quarter—as a preference for 1080p captured more than 20 percent of all plasma HD sales for the first time.
Meanwhile, the penetration rate of 1080p in LCD sets of 40 inches and larger rose to 72 percent in developed countries and 47 percent in “emerging regions,” DisplaySearch said.
1080p (regardless of frame rate) is usually referred to as “Full HD,” which is strictly a marketing term.
