SVT Launches Terrestrial Digital Service
The Swedish public-service television broadcaster SVT launched its SVT HD service on the Teracom terrestrial digital transmitter network on Saturday, 26 May. The transmissions are in MPEG-4, 720p, and include Dolby 5.1 surround sound.
The digital service rolled out first in the Mälardalen region with plans to extend to cover more than 1 million households in Stockholm, Västerås, Uppsala, and Södertälje, about 27 percent of Swedish households.
SVT HD has been available via the Canal Digital satellite platform since June 2006, and it has carried the Eurovision Song Contest and the HD nature documentary series "Planet Earth." Upcoming productions include the Allsång på Skansen community-singing event and the 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics from Osaka, Japan, with more original HD programming planned for 2008.
