Sweden to allow some broadcasters to charge for public sports screenings
The Swedish government will allow public broadcaster SVT to charge bar owners for displaying its sports coverage to patrons, according to a Swedish English-language Internet news site.
According to a report from The Local, SVT and commercial broadcaster TV4 attempted to charge bars for showing its World Cup soccer coverage last summer.
The report says Sweden’s cultural minister intervened to block the effort. The installation of a new center-right government, however, has brought a change in law authorizing public TV companies to charge bar owners.
The measure exempts small restaurants and other businesses, according to the report.
