Telenet, the Belgian communications company, is expanding its development of digital television in Flanders. Recently, the company reached agreement with Vivendi for purchase of the Flemish branch of Canal+.
In an area of Europe where cable television reaches 98 percent of the population, Telenet said it wants to increase programming choices, expand interactive services and include direct viewer participation in programming.
Telenet hired TANDBERG Television's systems integration team to design and build a new $2.4 million digital cable TV facility that includes near video-on-demand (NVOD) capability and other interactive features. In addition to TANDBERG's digital cable headend, compression and delivery products, the project includes technology from Divitech, Entone and Lysis.
