‘The Met’ to Encore Two HD Operas in Theaters
The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York and NCM Fathom are planning repeats of two of the Peabody Award-winning HD presentations, which were originally shown live in HD in movie theaters starting in 2006.
“The Met: Live in HD” series will include Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” (“Barber of Seville”) next Wednesday, July 29. The second encore, Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” (“The Magic Flute”), will be rebroadcast in HD the following Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Each encore presentation begins at 7 p.m. (local time) in 275 movie theaters nationwide in the United States. Theater chains taking parts in the two one-night-only events include:
- • AMC
- • Celebration! Cinema
- • Cobb Theatres
- • Goodrich Quality Theaters
- • Georgia Theater Company
- • Hollywood Theaters
- • Kerasotes Showplace Theatres
- • Malco Theatres
- • National Amusements
- • Regal Entertainment Group
Also featuring the two encores will be the El Raton Theatre (Raton, N.M.), Hollywood 14 (Asheville, N.C.), Palace Cinema 9 (South Burlington, Vt.) and Penn Cinema (Lititz, Pa.).
The Met’s series of live presentations in HD has featured 25 opera events in the past three seasons — including 11 last season. HD coverage of the new season will be featured on nearly 500 theater screens, according to NCM Fathom.
Along with a Peabody, The Met also won a special Emmy Award last January for “advancing technology through ongoing, live, global transmission of high-definition programming to movie theaters.”
