The Weather Channel Launches Local Forecasts on Dish
Dish Network viewers can now receive targeted weather information determined by the subscriber's zip code plus additional interactive enhancements and weather warnings.
The local content by The Weather Channel, launched Nov. 8, is made possible by Dish Network's innovative interactive technology, which is available to its subscribers nationwide. EchoStar Communications' Dish Network said it currently serves about 12.5 million satellite customers.
Dish Network subscribers will be able to access local weather from The Weather Channel by going to the News menu on DishHOME (Channel 100), Dish Network's Interactive Television portal, and selecting TWC Weather. The overlay mode provides local weather content including current conditions, Doppler radar, short-term forecast, and a five-day forecast. The companies said viewers can find local weather information for thousands of cities across the United States.
Additionally, a "trigger" feature is currently in development. Set to launch in the next few months, this trigger technology will allow satellite viewers to see their local weather during the network's "Local on the 8s" every 10 minutes. Select weather alerts will be displayed during "Local on the 8s" when in effect for the area.
