Toshiba Licenses XDR Memory for Next-Gen HD Chipset
Los Altos, Calif.-based Rambus, a technology licensing company specializing in high-speed memory design, said this week that Toshiba has licensed its XDR memory controller interface cell (XIO) and XDR memory controller (XMC) for its next-gen manufacturing line using HD chipsets.
The XIO and XMC will be implemented in Toshiba’s 65nm process. Operating at 4.8 GB, Rambus said its XDR memory architecture will allow Toshiba’s HD chipset to deliver the next level of image processing.
Toshiba said today’s newer HD television sets may now require as much memory bandwidth as some computers in order to deliver newly emerging “advanced features.” The XDR memory scheme uses patented Rambus technology designed to deliver the highest bandwidth available, the firm said, while using fewer DRAM (dynamic random access memory) devices than standard memory solutions. Such advanced features would include 1080p-plus resolution, refresh rates of 120 Hz, 12-bit color, and multiple HD picture-in-picture streaming.
