Turner rolls out new teleproduction truck to support simultaneous SD, HD production
Turner’s 52-foot mobile production unit is equipped with Canon HD lenses, 14 Ikegami HDK 79 HD cameras, and a Thomson Grass Valley Kalypso HD switcher.
Late last month, Turner Studios rolled out a new all-digital, 56-foot high-definition teleproduction truck for its maiden telecast of an Atlanta Hawks basketball game from Philips Arena.
The vehicle, which is designed to produce live multi-cast events in HD and SD at the same time, also will support Turner Entertainment Networks’ new HD-only channel, TNT HD, set to debut May 17.
The mobile production unit is equipped with Ikegami HD cameras that have both triax and fiber connectivity, and two Canon DIGI SUPER 100xs and seven DIGI SUPER 86xs studio/field HD lenses. Each includes Shift-IS image stabilization. Five portable Canon HJ21x7.8B IRSD lenses with the added control of a digital drive are also onboard.
The DIGI SUPER 100xs, or XJ100x9.3B IE-D, provides a triple-digit zoom range from wide angle to telephoto. Canon’s image stabilizer technology is capable of eliminating vibrations at a frequency of up to 10Hz.
Turner is also making extensive use of the FOR-A DCC-700 MU digital color corrector and the DCC-700H MU HDTV color corrector to enhance a variety of incoming feeds to provide the telecast with a consistent look and feel. The FOR-A digital units provide precise control over all color correction parameters to maximize the appearance of source video signals.

On board the new Turner truck are two SD and two HD versions of the DCC-700H. The HD color correctors provide high-quality processing of 1920x1035/59.94i (60i) fps and 1920x1080/59.94i signals. Most of the HD projects produced with the truck will be in the 1080i format.
The truck also makes extensive use of a Pinnacle Deko and Chyron iNFiNiT! for graphics production.
