U.K.: Glyndebourne Opera comes to Cinema HD
The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in Manhattan is not alone in its yearly quest to bring opera to worldwide audiences via cinemas and HD. Glyndebourne Festival Opera in the United Kingdom currently is in the midst of providing a trio of operas to movie houses mostly throughout England and Scotland—live and in HD. All screenings include 5.1 surround sound.
The first presentation, "Julius Caesar," was aired nationwide on Sunday, Oct. 5. "Hansel and Gretel" is on tap for November, and "La Cenerentola" will follow during the holidays in December.
Participating cinemas are located in Glasgow, London (Odeon Lincoln, Odeon Covent Garden, Empire London Leicester Square, and Genesis London Mile End) and about two dozen other theaters throughout the empire. The hamlet of Glyndebourne in East Sussex is about 50 miles south of London.
