Geffen Records has acquired an ExtremeStor-iTrax T160 storage server from Globalstor Data Corp. in Chatsworth, Calif., for the Interscope Geffen A&M (IGA) label group's new in-house recording studio. IGA, a division of Universal Music Group, selected the 16-drive solution that includes two separate RAID controllers.
While IGA's studio in Santa Monica, Calif., is under construction, Engineer and Producer Tal Herzberg and Geffen Records Chairman Ron Fair continue to work at the Record Plant, a state-of-the-art, five-room recording facility in Hollywood that has served as their base for the past five years. Herzberg said the ExtremeStor-iTrax T160 has seamlessly integrated into the Record Plant's infrastructure and will function in virtually any IGA facility.
Using an iSCSI initiator, the ExtremeStor-iTrax appears as a local disc drive on any computer. It has a pair of iSCSI initiators for Mac bundled with each Globalstor solution. Globalstor solutions can also be used as NAS (Network Attached Storage) servers in conjunction with iSCSI. Globalstor data storage solutions are used in conjunction with Pro Tools and other digital audio workstation software on both Macintosh and Windows platforms.
"The fact that you can access your entire database from anywhere in the world is just priceless. Whether I am in New York, Maui, or Australia, my entire database is available and accessible. I can protect it in many ways, and allow some of our clients to access certain sections. It's just like a normal hard drive: you see the folders, you drag and drop, and have no notion that you're not physically located next to it," Herzberg said.
