The National Geographic Channel's series “Science of the Bible,” which uses modern technology and research to explore a wide range of biblical accounts, was shot on location in the Middle East last spring with Panasonic’s AJ-HDC27 VariCam HD cinema camera.
After a seven-week shoot in Turkey, series’ Director of Photographer Kris Denton purchased a VariCam for subsequent work on another National Geographic series.
With the VariCams, Director of Photographer Kris Denton was able to push overexposure in instances such as looking out through a window, and still retain detail in the foreground and beyond. Denton shot the series predominantly at 30p because of the need to integrate a high number of graphics in post. The editing process encompassed downconverting material to SD using Panasonic’s AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO HD VTR, cutting at 20:1 resolution on an Avid, color correcting on a DaVinci, and on-lining on an Adrenaline. The show is mastered out to Panasonic D-5 HD for delivery to National Geographic.
