The wireless HDTV market currently is in an “incubation” stage with fewer than 100,000 devices expected to ship in 2008. But in 2012, the market could expand tenfold to 1 million units, according to a new study from ABI Research.
The study, “Wireless Video Cable Replacement Market and Technologies,” finds three systems — 5GHz, 60GHz and ultra wideband (UWB) — currently contending for dominance
Each has strengths and weakness, said ABI Research principal analyst Steve Wilson. The 5GHz systems are “better understood and more proven,” he said. However, to get the data rates needed for HD will demand new, more complex solutions. UWB has an advantage in bandwidth, “but drops rapidly at greater ranges,” he said. The 60GHz approach supports high data rates, but to date, only a single company has advanced a viable solution.
