Zombies Protest DTV Transition

HOUSTON: The undead were said to line the streets of Houston on Friday, June 12, the final day of the nation’s full transition to digital television. Hundreds, dozens, even, of zombies wearing analog-TV heads lined a sidewalk in the city to protest the end of what their heads represented. Home Theater Magazine said the zombies were members of the Texas Campaign for the Environment, concerned about the effect that an estimated 3 million tossed-out TVs would have on Texas landfills. The undead held their protest at Victory Park, home of the Dallas Mavericks, apartments, offices and various over-priced retailers.

“These zombies are here to serve as a reminder that trashing obsolete televisions is a toxic option that may come back to haunt us,” program director Jeffrey Jacoby told the Dallas Observer. “You don’t want these in your landfills,” meaning the zombies.

Texas legislators recently passed a bill requiring TV set manufacturers to provide free recycling for their products, but Gov. Rick Perry vetoed the legislation.

Previously, toxic TV zombies took their protest to the 2009 CES show, including a Vegas-style revue set to the Michael Jackson classic “Thriller.” — Deborah D. McAdams
