12 CE manufacturers respond to converter box request for quote
Twelve consumer electronics firms responded to a request for quote (RFQ) from the NAB and MSTV for the development of a basic terrestrial digital-to-analog converter box prototype. The development of such a box is seen as key to the digital transition.
The associations, which issued the RFQ June 20, received the responses by their July 29 deadline.
More than 21 million U.S. homes rely exclusively on over-the-air reception for television. More than 73 million TV sets rely on over-the-air service. Developing a low cost, high quality converter is necessary to prevent some consumers from being left behind when analog broadcasts end.
Evaluation of the responses is expected to be completed around Labor Day, the trade groups said.
