ATEME debuts Kyrion family of HD encoders and transcoders

ATEME recently announced its Kyrion family of HD encoders and transcoders, which use MPEG-4 AVC encoding to enable HD video to occupy less bandwidth than comparable MPEG-2 encoded video, allowing broadcasters to offer more HD channels to customers without a major infrastructure upgrade. Video can be delivered to any viewing outlet, including mobile devices.

The 1RU Kyrion comprises a live video stream encoder, an offline file encoder and a transcoder, all employing MPEG-4 AVC encoding. The live encoder provides an operating scale of .5Mb/s to 25Mb/s, allowing users to reach audiences on any viewing device. The transcoder can be used for the native support of broadcast HD on media PCs or mobile devices, which are all standardized around MPEG-4. Both the encoder and transcoder provide advanced main- and high-profile encoding for maximum flexibility, with the overall design enabling compression using a fully-programmable FPGA architecture. Full support for interlaced video (MBAFF) is offered. Additional features include the ability for real-time review of encoded/transcoded content without a video monitor and an iPod-like scroll wheel for selecting menus and options.
