Mobile 4 is the latest vehicle to join CBC British Columbia's fleet of Vancouver-based remote production facilities.
Designed to meet the mobile audio recording needs of CBC Television and Radio-Canada, the vehicle's 96kHz-capable, all-digital studio is built around a Studer Vista 7. Mobile 4 measures 31.5ft x 12.5ft x 8ft. Built on a GMC chassis, the truck is a fully contained video-friendly unit offering a 12kW generator, 200-amp DC service, and complete heating and air conditioning.
On the audio side, 10mi of wire are installed in Mobile 4. There also are more than 4000 connectors - many with multiple wires, all soldered by hand - walls that are nearly 5in thick for maximum isolation, and a full complement of professional recording equipment, including a 40-fader Vista 7 capable of controlling and routing 240 inputs to 168 outputs.
Over the past few months, Mobile 4's Vista 7 has been used on a number of Canadian music events, including the Vancouver Folk Festival, the Vancouver and Victoria Symphonies, several operas and various live national simulcasts.
