CBS freelancer shot in Iraq
An Iraqi freelance journalist working for CBS News was shot and wounded April 5 in Mosul by U.S. troops who mistook the camera he was using for a weapon.
According to a statement from the military, the incident occurred during an engagement with an Iraqi insurgent. The journalist was wounded in the hip by troops from the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. CBS News has declined releasing the name of the journalist for his own protection. However, a report from AFP identified the cameraman as Abdel Amir Younes Hussein.
Recently, the U.S. military raised questions about whether the man was an authentic member of the media when it discovered tapes of various insurgent attacks on coalition forces. The military has detained the man and is investigating the situation.
