Dolby Laboratories has announced its latest advancement in lossless audio technology — Dolby TrueHD. Designed to take advantage of the recent developments in high-definition optical disc formats, the Dolby TrueHD audio codec features end viewer performance equal to high-resolution recording studio masters.
Together with Dolby Digital Plus these technologies are essential audio elements for next-generation high-definition broadcasting, production post-production and playback products, having been adopted for use in both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats. Both Dolby technologies are mandatory audio codecs in the HD-DVD format as well as optional features in the Blu-ray Disc format. With Dolby TrueHD, viewers can experience multichannel surround sound as the codec provides support for all of the new speaker locations designated by SMPTE for digital cinema applications (RP 226).
Dolby TrueHD builds upon the foundation of MLP lossless technology by incorporating higher bit rates, additional audio channels, enhanced stereo mix support, and extensive metadata functionality, including dynamic range control and dialog normalization. The Dolby TrueHD technology helps to create audio that's bit-for-bit identical to recording studio masters.
