European standards agency selects DVB-H standard

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) — the body tasked with standardization of information and communication technologies within Europe —has announced Digital Video Broadcast–Handheld (DVB-H) will become the mobile TV standard for Europe.

DVB-H allows transmission of TV, radio and video channels to mobile handheld devices such as cell phones equipped with an integrated receiver. The ETSI announcement was welcomed by mobile phone manufacturer Nokia, which plans to offer DVB-H equipped handsets for sale globally in 2006.

In the United State Crown Castle and Nokia are conducting preliminary tests of DVB-H technology in Pittsburgh, PA. The tests, which began in October, are intended to test the feasibility of using DVB-H in the United States.
