FCC makes public LPTV, repeater DTV transition Report and Order
The FCC has made public a Report and Order laying out the rules under which low-power television, repeater stations and Class A television stations will make their transition from analog to digital transmission.
The commission adopted definitions and permissible use provisions for digital TV translator and LPTV stations to mirror their analog operation. Digital translators will rebroadcast DTV broadcast signals.
The order is intended to hasten the transition, but left the final transition timing to the commission’s discretion. It discusses in detail how the transition will occur, including flash-cutting from analog to digital service, when and how dual analog and digital transmission will be allowed, and the procedure LPTV stations must follow to seek spectrum for simultaneous analog and digital transmission during the transition.
