Author and industry consultant Tore Nordahl reports in his latest article that a major U.S. TV network has concluded after testing that the JPEG2000 compression technology yields network-quality HD compression at 100Mb/s "even after multiple codec generations."
The article, "Studio/Broadcast-quality HD, live over IP in real time... guaranteed," examines the role JPEG2000 may play in the transport of HD video over significant distances and the possibility that IP distribution of JPEG2000-encoded content may take a place alongside microwave and satellite transmission as an acceptable solution.
Real-time transmission protocol (RTP) over IP and highly efficient JPEG2000 10-bit 4:2:2 full bandwidth compression offer an "affordable and flexible approach to broadcast-quality HD contribution and distribution over IP networks," Nordahl says.
The article looks at the T-VIPS TVG430 HD-SDI to IP Video Gateway as part of its examination of JPEG2000 via IP.
