From the first scene of the forthcoming DVD of the Loggins & Messina concert recorded at the Santa Barbara Bowl last summer, the viewer feels like part of the action. A pre-show interview with Kenny Loggins in the dressing room sounds as fully three-dimensional as the concert itself, with surround ambience enveloping the listener. It’s one of several recent examples of how veteran location recording specialist Guy Charbonneau, owner of Le Mobile Recording, uses the Lexicon 960L multichannel digital effects system to bring a cinematic aspect to his recordings of live concert and theatrical events.
Charbonneau especially likes using the 960L for music, noting the unit’s warm sound when applied to a stereo guitar part, making it especially applicable for use in discrete surround effects. He also uses the 960L for ambience in interview situations, allowing the digital effects to help retain a realistic sense of space when transferred to the final DVD product. Other recent projects using the Lexicon effects unit include the upcoming cinema and DVD releases of the Coachella Music Festival, and the recording of a recent live theatrical performance of The Ten Commandments starring Val Kilmer at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.
