McGill University's Schulich School of Music in Montreal offers both Master's and PhD degrees in audio engineering. To facilitate high-level, high-resolution recording work, the school recently added two Merging Technologies' Pyramix digital audio workstations to its facility and upgraded the existing Pyramix system already in-house.
The new systems are each comprised of two Pyramix MB5s, with an AES-DSD daughter card and a SDIF daughter card. Each system is interfaced with a new Merging Sphynx II converter in order to record up to eight channels of DSD. The systems also have up to 24 I/O of PCM audio.
The upgrade consisted of an extra MB5 card making four, two extra MADI cards + 1 AES-DSD daughter card in addition to the SDIF daughter card already present. The purchase also included another Sphynx II converter to team up with an existing Emmlabs converter. The system performance gives a maximum of 128 I/O PCM supported by Merging Pyramix v.5, up to 16 tracks of DSD and SACD authoring option.
In addition to the hardware systems, technical training was offered to all who needed it, and 14 copies of the Pyramix Native/Media Bundle were supplied to students and teachers at the university.
