MXL Microphones has introduced the M3 Silicon Valve solid-state microphone. Building upon the success of the immensely popular V6, the new M3 is a large diaphragm, pressure-gradient condenser microphone with a warm, transparent sound reminiscent of popular vintage microphones from the early 60s. Optimized for vocal and dialog work, there are two versions available, the standard M3 and the M3-P, which is voiced specifically for female vocals.
The new M3 and M3-P microphones are the result of more than three years of engineering development at Marshall Electronics’ HDTV labs in El Segundo, CA, to create the warmth and transparent sonic clarity that is the hallmark of the company’s Silicon Valve series. The M3 uses a balanced, transformer coupled, solid-state FET amplifier output stage that bears a striking resemblance to the designs found in the front end of early British consoles. The result is a solid-state condenser microphone that mimics the performance characteristics of tubes with uncanny accuracy, yet requires no warm-up time.
Both models employ a full 1in capsule with a gold sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm. Cosmetically, the standard M3 is finished in a hi-tech, iridescent blue with a silver plated grille, while the M3-P sports a pink and silver look. Both versions ship in a cherry wood box.
