The new 702 digital field recorders from Sound Devices handle a day’s worth of audio capture using Compact Flash media.
Sound Devices has announced the immediate availability of two new portable digital audio recorders, models 702 and 702T. Both are compact Flash-based, two-channel recorders that share the sound quality and field-ready chassis design of the company’s other successful 7 Series digital recorders. Both support sampling rates from 192kHz down to 32kHz, reading and recording at either 16-bit or 24-bit resolution. The two models are basically identical, with the addition of full time code capability on the 702T.
Product features include Sound Devices’ next-generation microphone preamps, along with phantom power, limiters, and high-pass filters to ensure high quality capture of audio in the field. Compact Flash card support starts at 128MB and is limited only by card size and its associated write speed. Audio format storage support includes WAV, BWF and MP3 formats. File transfer is via Firewire, allowing fast download to either PC (Windows 2000 or XP) or Apple (OS X) computers.
Like other 7 Series digital recorders, the 702 series incorporates an on-board Li-Ion rechargeable battery (common camcorder type) for up to four hours of field operation.
The physical packaging of the 702 recorders is robust and compact, in keeping with the product’s intended usage for remote location recording. Metering is extensive and designed for easy reading in full daylight. Dimensions are 8.2in x 1.8in x 4.9in, and the loaded (with battery) weight is less than 3lb. Both the 702 and 702T are now shipping and will be shown at the upcoming NAB show.
