Sysmedia secures major Danish Broadcasting subtitling contract

SysMedia has won the order for a complete new subtitle preparation system at Danish Broadcasting (DR). The system will be used across both the Danish state broadcaster’s TV channels, DR1 and DR2.

The contract involves the supply of SysMedia’s WinCAPS professional subtitling software for 25 workstations covering both recorded programming and live news. It will also involve integration with the newsroom system and other IT technologies within DR. The project is due to be complete before the end of the year.

Key features of the WinCAPS include the AutoTime offline subtitle timing based on speech presence detection in any language, integration with the newsroom system, and the ability to handle mixed-mode open and teletext subtitles.

The subtitling system upgrade project will dovetail with another project of national importance in Denmark - the creation of a Danish speech recognition engine. A Danish development company is conducting this work with input from the Ministry of Culture, The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Philips Speech Recognition Systems, and both Danish national television broadcasters DR and TV2. A key benefit will be to enable speech input for subtitling – particularly beneficial for live events such as sports, as well as in the transcription of offline material.
