Things are likely to be speeding up at Verizon Wireless later this year with last week’s announcement that the company will begin deploying some of the most advanced EV-DO technology available to the industry.
Nortel will supply the company with advanced CDMA 1xEV-DO Revision (Rev.) A technology, which will provide for data speeds significantly faster than currently available. Nortel's EV-DO Rev. A technology can provide peak data rates of up to 3.1Mb/s from a cellular base station to the subscriber and up to 1.8Mb/s from a subscriber to a cellular base station.
The higher bandwidth will enable video telephony, advanced multimedia and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). At NAB2006, KRON in San Francisco disclosed that it was testing a Bay Area WiMax broadband service provider as an alternative to traditional ENG transmission for field contribution. Similarly, the upgrade of the Verizon Wireless EV-DO network could offer stations using a file-based workflow a practical way to use common file transfer protocol technology to contribute raw footage and edited stories from the field.
Doug Wolff, Nortel vice president and general manager, CDMA, said EV-DO Rev. A would allow Verizon Wireless to introduce real-time services such as video and streaming media services that “rely on quality of services capabilities.”
Verizon Wireless is expected to take delivery of the Rev. A technology in the third quarter.
