Young males show strong interest in receiving mobile TV, says survey

As television broadcasters watch developments in mobile TV events unfold, a new study shows particularly strong interest among boys and young men in receiving multimedia content on next-generation wireless devices.

The study, “Mobile Broadband Applications and Content: A Market Assessment among Youth and Young Adults” from The Management Network Group revealed that two out of five survey respondents said they would like to receive commercially supported video clips on their wireless devices. Male consumers between 13 and 24 showed the strongest interest in receiving mobile multimedia services. Key findings include:

  • Music ranks first among consumer interest with mobile TV and video ranking second and multiplayer, 3-D gaming coming in third.
  • Nearly one in four would either be extremely likely or very likely to switch to a competitive carrier if their existing carrier did not offer advanced, multimedia wireless content and services.
  • Interest in broadband and multimedia services is equal among prepaid and postpaid customers.
  • Most consumers anticipate upgrading their handsets through a longer term contract to overcome the price barrier of 3G capable handsets.
